NASW Alabama | American Red Cross: Disaster Mental Health Volunteer Training

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Alabama Chapter in collaboration with the American Red Cross is facilitating a one day training workshop related to Mental Health Volunteer Training for pertinent practice areas including the disciplinary areas of Social Work, Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Registered Nurses (RN), etc. that ultimately impact those we serve.  Alabama is considered to be one of the most disaster-prone states in the Southeast.  Volunteers are always needed to respond to disasters in local communities throughout the state. To sign up as a Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteer, however, you must be trained. Red Cross volunteers and staff work hand in hand to respond to disasters ranging from single family home fires to larger disasters, such as tornadoes, hurricanes and floods, affecting families and communities at large.  Be proactive in your professional development by attending this rewarding training - it's the first step to becoming a valuable and contributing resource that is capable of making a difference in our communities and in the lives of those impacted by unexpected Disaster and / or Destruction..  Topics being covered throughout the day specifically include:

  • Disaster Services Overview - Attendees are provided an introduction to Disaster Services and its multiple components at the American Red Cross.  Facilitator: American Red Cross Staff.

  • Disaster Mental Health Fundamentals - Attendees are introduced to the key concepts, knowledge and skills required to become a Disaster Mental Health (DMH) volunteer. Participants must be currently licensed mental health professionals, or can be faculty mentors with student oversight for student volunteer coordination.  Experience the opportunity to apply learning to real-world examples reflecting challenges on a Disaster Action Team response or larger disaster relief operation. Participants eligible to attend can  be social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, registered nurse (RN) with psychiatric nursing experience and training, etc.  Facilitator: Suzanne Geiger, MSW, LCSW-PIP

  • Psychological First Aid (PFA) - Participants learn how to cope with emergencies and learn to prepare, respond to, and recover from trauma.  Topics include spotting stress, lowering stress through resilience, identification of community resources, etc.  Facilitator: Suzanne Geiger, MSW, LCSW-PIP

** Seven (7) Contact Hours will be earned by Social Work participants of this Training Workshop.  Other Disciplinary Areas Continuing Education Verifications may be available (check with your regulatory organization for details).  Lunch is included **

Taught by Jim Lawrence - Click here to Read Jim's Bio.

9 CE Hours for 100% attendance
9 GRI Elective Hours for 100% attendance

The Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR®) designation is designed for real estate buyer agents who focus on working directly with buyer-clients.

When you decide to earn your ABR®, you gain:

  • Valuable real estate education that elevates your skills and knowledge in the eyes of home buyers.

  • Ongoing specialized information, programs and updates that help you stay on top of the issues and trends in successfully representing home buyers.

  • Access to REBAC members-only marketing tools and resources, which provide an additional competitive edge.

The path towards becoming an ABR® begins by taking the Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR®) Designation Course. After you complete this course, you will automatically become a member of REBAC for one year—free! You’ll then be able to access many of our member benefits and work towards completing your remaining ABR® designation requirements, which are listed below.

For additional details, see frequently asked questions. You can also contact REBAC by e-mail or call 1-800-648-6224.Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR®) Designation Requirements

To obtain and use the ABR® designation, you must complete all four (4) requirements:

  1. Successful completion of the two-day Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR®) Designation Course, including an 80 percent passing grade on the exam. After you complete this course you will have three (3) years in which to complete the other ABR® designation requirements.
